High voltage test on railway vehicles

Testing rail vehicles can literally be a very exciting affair. Exciting indeed, as test voltages can go up to 80 kV! And they are of course accompanied by a high test current. As a result, high voltage sources with high power are necessary for insulation tests on rail vehicles.

But also the design of the high-voltage tester is rather unusual, compared for example to a normal laboratory routine, because who wants to stand directly next to an 80 kV system?
For this obvious reason – and often also for reasons of space management – a split device is the ideal design for these applications.

The testing device: Exceptional shape – exceptional performance

The following pictures give a great insight into an actual application for a high voltage testing system for trains.
The test device is divided into two units. The unit in the background contains the entire control electronics including voltage adjustment of the high-voltage transformer. The unit in the foreground contains the actual high-voltage transformer – supplemented by a cable winding drum and an extendable telescopic column. By means of this telescopic column, the high-voltage test cable is lifted to the roof of the rail vehicle, where it is then clamped to the pantograph. The opposite pole is the entire chassis of the rail vehicle. Other types of construction for feeding the high-voltage test cable can also be implemented here, for example if the rail vehicle is supplied via a conductor rail from below, as is the case with local commuter trains and underground systems.

Technical data of the application

  • high voltage transformer with 80.000 V  ACeff.
  • insulating the transformer with insulating oil.
  • voltage measurement via integrated high voltage divider.
  • test current up to 200 mA.
